We believe providing children with healthy lunches contributes to their general well being, learning ability and positive behaviours. We want to be part of that healthy foundation.
So, every Monday and Thursday, a group of faithful volunteers from Okotoks United Church, the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints and our larger community, gather in our commercial kitchen to prepare and pack enough bags to feed between 40 and 60 kids every school day. Another group of volunteers delivers them to the schools. A third group has purchased the food in bulk to save on costs. "It takes a village", as they say.
We have been doing this since March 2017 when the need was brought to our attention. The Foothills School Division identifies the childen in need. The schools then distribute the lunches in a confidential and inclusive manner. The feedback from the schools and families has been heartwarming and encouraging.
The community of Okotoks United Church and the community of Okotoks at large have generously supported this outreach with faithful financial support for over five years now: The Okotoks Lions Club, Okotoks Elk Club, Okotoks Food Bank, The George Traditional House, Ubuntu Meat Pies, DeWinton St. Andrew's United Church in DeWinton, Karson Builders, Okotoks Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Foothills Shrine Club, Kinsmen Club of Okotoks, Foothills Lions Club, Okotoks Rotary Club and individuals from within our congregation and community have joined us in this endeavour.
